WHAT DOES MUSIC LOOK LIKE?
EN NEDE, SEKS TILBAGE
My bachelor project examines the symbiosis between music and graphics. Through a series of experiments The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is transformed into different graphic material. The experiments explore different approaches to visualization and take advantage of digital, analog and sensual methods.
Although the music in the project is case material for the experiments a final product, new artwork for the record is made. This is packaging design in a classic sense, but where such work is usually based on the album artist's visual identity, texts, history, this artwork is a direct expression of the music more objective graphical form. The goal of the product is not to highlight the identity of the record, but a presentation of the experiment.
The following persons should be mentioned, without them I could not have assembled, built, soldered or understood the technical challenges of the project. Jeff Ledger and Nicholas McClanahan: data and code to "Videomaskine". Robert Howsare: idea for "Tegnemaskine nr. I". Felix Turner for the Rutt-Etra-Izer. Dan Royer and Sandy Noble: data and code to "Tegnemaskine nr. II". A special thanks to my supervisor of the project Anette Højlund.
