The aim of this BA project was to come up with a proposal for transforming Prora (A huge holiday resort in Rügen, build by the Nazis, but never finished in 1936-39) Into a learning centre for students from Berlin University of Arts.

During a study trip to Prora I got really fascinated by the decay of Prora and it’s exposing of raw materials, which had this amazing tectonic potential. You really felt like being in a rough place, while you were moving around.
From there I decided to install a hip hop dance school due to the roughness of Prora, which I felt like was suitable for street dance, but also because I wanted to preserve as much as possible of the history, and hip hop artist can work or dance everywhere.
As my design strategy a chose to work with a parasite because I also got rather fascinated by the contrast of this massive concrete building and a behind laying forest, which was so thick and full of life. I saw the parasite as this missing link between inside/outside, but also as this element, which could bring in a softer materiality, while preserving parts of the history.
I started out by working with the landscape and the area and analysing where my intervention could take place. Afterwards I began to work from the inside and out to create new spatial possibilities, without removing to much.
I decided to move the circulation outside the façade, leaving the interior almost intact, but with new possibilities. By moving the circulation outside the façade, I also created a new skin or a new clima-shield for the building, for a better preservation.
